The dewy air hangs still before dawn the a rural farming district of Wiltshire, England. A small glowing ball appears hovering over a wheat field. It stops and great sections of wheat below fall uniformly into a complex geometric pattern, steam rising from the design.

What are Crop Circles?

Crop Circles are generally defined as: “An area of standing crops that has been flattened in the form of a circle or other pattern.” They appear all over the earth every year, but are most prominent and well known on the farmlands of England. There are over 100 documented sightings each year on average [1], most of the reports coming from disgruntled farmers.

The First Circles

“Unexplained geometric designs occurred in the fields of wheat and corn in Scotland in 1678, and rural residents of England speak of the “corn fairies” that made similar designs in the fields in the late 1800s.

Researchers have discovered accounts of the discovery of so-called fairy circles in fields and meadows dating back to medieval times throughout the British Isles, Germany, Scandinavia,and France. Recent evidence indicates that Chinese farmers found crop circles in their fields as many as 3,000 years ago.” [2]

In the 1970s and ‘80s crop-circles reached the height of their popularity as it gained global media attention and people began to really question these events. This interest eventually fizzled out when nobody could offer strong evidence explaining who or what was creating these things.

How are they formed?

By what they are formed, it is difficult to say. But experts have deduced that genuine crop circles are created by a process heats and bends the plants at the stalk about an inch off the ground. The excited atoms in this area cause the stalk to become less dense and thus soft enough to bend. The plants fall over (very uniformly in criss-cross layers) and at 90 degrees the heat ceases and the stalks harden again in the new positions. The plants are unharmed and will continue to grow from this position. Steam has been reported to be rising from recently formed circles due to the evaporation this would cause.

A Hoax?

Officially yes. Logically, no. In 1991 2 guys by names of Doug and Dave “came clean” and admitted that they were behind the whole thing. Naturally they were asked to demonstrate how they did this and with some string and rope they managed to flatten out a very basic design. Of course, any crop-circle expect could tell this crude imitation from a genuine crop-circle in the blink of an eye. But it seems the world is at a shortage of crop-circle experts. This was advertised as the explanation behind the whole ordeal by the ______ government. Case-closed. But nobody, not even the few experts out there, had a better (provable) explanation it seemed, and that was that.

So What?

Every year there are genuine crop-circles created. So why don’t you hear about them? Well, what is there to say about them? We can explain them no better now than we could 40 years ago, and people seem to be generally skeptical of that which cannot yet be fully understood. But they do exist. Any small amount of research can tell you that. What’s fascinating is that these patterns are clearly created by something intelligent (probably extremely intelligent). It is my guess that there are hidden messages in these crop-circles. Keys to new understanding and technologies. Perhaps when we are ready, we shall begin to understand.
